Migrate vCenter 6.0 Update 2 (Windows) to VCSA 6.5

In this post i will show you, i hope, a helpful step by step guide how to migrate an existing vCenter 6.0 installed on a Windows OS to the new GA released vCenter server Appliance 6.5. After the release of the new vSphere version 6.5, is now the expected migration scenario from the windows basic vCenter to VCSA possible.
VCSA is the vCenter of the future and from the scalability and performance values there is no more reason to install the vCenter on a windows based operating system. You can read all the new features of vSphere 6.5 here. vSphere 6.5 – What´s New

Before starting with the migration it is strongly recommended to backup your source vCenter and read carefully the VMWare instructions

Let´s GO 😉

Source vCenter 6.0 Update 2 Build 3634793

first mount the ISO image of the VCSA installer to the old vCenter windows system and start the migration assistant to check and prepare the source vCenter for migration

type your SSO password and click Enter

you can now start the migration

mount now the ISO to a different VM as the source vCenter and start the installer

connect to the source vCenter

click Yes to accept

provide the credentials for the target ESXi where you want to host the appliance

click Yes to accept the certificate Warning

enter the name of the appliance and click Next

choose your deployment type depends on your needs. i will choose tiny for my environment

select the datastore where the new vCSA will be deployed

enter a temporary IP settings for the VCSA. after the migration the VCSA will take over the IP of the source vCenter

check your configuration and click Finish to start the deployment

Perfect 🙂

after few minutes the new VCSA is ready to use and we can start with the Migration-Stage 2

as you see my Wizard has a problem to proceed with Stage 2 due to a network issue in my Nested virtual LAB.

after enabling the Promiscuous Mode and forged transmits on the vSwitch, i´m able to reach the IP address of the VCSA (needed only in Nested virtualization environments)

continue with Stage 2.

give the credentials to log in to the vCSA

connect to the source Windows vCenter

accept the warning

provide a valid credentials with authorization to join the same domain as your source

select the Data you want to migrate and Click Next

Click Finish

Accept the Warning

Now the data will be exported from the source and imported to the new VCSA. The old vCenter will be shut down.

You did it 😉

you can now connect to the VCSA and verify the migrated settings

looks good 😉

Thank you for your attention and following.
