Upgrade vRealize Log Insight 4.0 to 4.6

With the new release 4.6 at the begin of this month VMWare delivers more improvements and new features for vRealize Log Insight server and agent. (Release Notes)

before upgrading to the latest version please take a snapshot of your actual appliance and check the right update sequence for your version.

Important Upgrade Notes:

  • To upgrade to vRealize Log Insight 4.6, you must be running vRealize Log Insight 4.5.
  • When performing a manual upgrade, you must upgrade workers one at a time. Upgrading multiple workers at the same time causes an upgrade failure. When you upgrade the master node to vRealize Log Insight 4.6, a rolling upgrade occurs unless specifically disabled.
  • Upgrading must be done from the master node’s FQDN. Upgrading with the Integrated Load Balancer IP address is not supported.
  • vRealize Log Insight does not support two-node clusters. Add a third vRealize Log Insight node of the same version as the existing two nodes before performing an upgrade.
  • If the vRLI upgrade (.pak file) has a  new JRE version, then the user-installed certificates in a vRealize Log Insight setup (such as for event forwarding) become invisible after upgrade.

if your Node version is earlier than 4.0 see here: Upgrade to vRealize Log Insight 4.0

today, i ran again in the known issue when the bootbank of the esxi run out of space. So i will share with you the steps to resolve this failure.

The issue seems to be happening only for IBM Servers installed using custom images. IBM stuffed the image a little more than needed.

“ERROR: The host returns esxupdate error code:15. The package manager transactions is not successful. Check the update Manager log files and esxupdate.log files for more details”

in the /var/log/esxupdate of the affected esxi you see entries similar to

“ERROR: The pending transaction requires 239 MB free space, however the maximum supported size is 239 MB.”

Configure windows server as NFS Target for Loginsight Archive

Data archiving preserves old logs that might otherwise be removed from the Log Insight virtual appliance due to storage constraints. Log Insight can store archived data to NFS mounts.

to take the control of your logs and avoid that the provisioned storage partition of the logging server growth you can use very simple steps to configure loginsight archive.

in this case we will use a windows server 2016 as NFS archive target for the logs.

before describing how to configure it is important to know that;

Log Insight does not manage the NFS mount used for archiving purposes. If system notifications are enabled, Log Insight sends an email when the NFS mount is about to run out of space or is unavailable . If the NFS mount does not have enough free space or is unavailable for a period of time greater than the retention period of the virtual appliance, Log Insight stops ingesting new data until the NFS mount has enough free space, becomes available, or archiving is disabled.
the prerequisites for configuring the archive are:
– the NFS Partition must allow reading and writing operations for guest accounts.
– the mount must not require authentication.
– the NFS server must support NFS v3.
